M.B. Abdul Rahman is a renowned advocate, social worker, legal rights activist, and promotor of Beary culture and welfare.

Early Life and Career

M.B. Abdul Rahman was born on 15th June, 1944 to parents M.B. Yusuf and Fathima at Koila village, Athoor. Having completed his Pre-University education at St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, he pursued his higher studies at Maharaja Government College, Mysore (B.A.) and Government Law College, Bangalore (BA.BL). Hailing from the reupted Mata family, he imbibed his character from his father and role model, Mr. M.B. Yusuf, a prompt supporter of education himself.

To achieve his father’s dream, the young & dedicated Abdul Rahman worked hard to pursue his BA.BL. After completing his studies, he moved to Mangalore and started working under Mangalore’s top advocate Mr. Annappa Kamath. Focusing solely on his career, his commitment paid off after 15 years when he established himself to be a well-known competitive advocate who worked on both civil and criminal cases.

In the year 1974, the ‘Karnataka Land Reform Act’ was passed.  At a time when most people were unaware of the land reform act, M.B researched on the Land reform act and visited several village tenants and conducted lectures on the same which turend out to be a huge help to the tenants. Later on, hundreds of people started to approach Mr. M.B to learn about the act and reap the benefits from the Act. This, however, turned out to be a threat to the land owners, resulting in conflict. The provisions of the act helped numerous tenants reclaim their land from land owners, but due to lack of awareness and very little legal represenation, most of them were deprived of their rights. It was M.B. Abdul Rahman’s commitment and selfless service that brought hope to the lives of thousands of poor villagers.

Progressing in his career, Mr. M.B. went on to become the member of Karnataka Wakf Board. Knowing the legal field inside out, he started by clearing land documents for Masjids all over Karnataka, but didn’t rest there. Taking his ideas one step further, he implemeted a scheme as part of a Green Revolution to minimize water usage in Masjids used for Ablution which was showed result immediately.

Social contributions

Being an advocate, he wanted to make sure that the law is fair to every individual of the community. There is an interesting event which inspired Mr. M.B. to venture into social service. An eight year old girl suffering from a disease and in immediate need of blood was admitted at the Wenlock hospital. After looking everywhere, he realized that the community needed to come forward to donate blood and save those in need. This led him to start a blood bank for emergencies in the year 2000 named Blood Brain Bio Banking Trust. Blood stands for blood donation, Brain stands for education, and Bio stands for environmental protection.

What started with just 7 donors grew into a vast blood bank with over 700 registered donors due the efforts of Mr. Abdul Rahman. He travelled extensively across the district and conducted blood camps in various Masjids at Kokkada, Pattrame, Pattooru, Kaayathadka, Belthangadi, Puttur, Sullya, and more for one full decade (2000-2010)

Alongside being a prompt supporter of education, Mr. M.B. Abdul Rahman is a member of the Wakf committee and one among the trustees of Noor Masjid, Mangalore.

Thoughts

“Law is a very good profession for our community. Law protects the people. We must always abide by the rules of law. We must try to help people in every way. Money is not always necessary to help people. I have tried my best to help people claim their rights and enjoy the benefits of law. This is why I received acknowledgement from my community. During my professional days, I received a lot of opposition from people saying that ‘lawyers are incapable of indulging in social activities’. My father once told me that there will come a time when people will have no education and information about the law, this is when you have to help the people by teaching them about the rules of law. He also added that this will be the best reward to me for giving you education. Our society is very diverse. If we maintain a good relationship with others, we can live in a very peaceful manner according to our will. We should always avoid the act of violence, if there is any dispute taking place, we must try to talk it out instead of using force and violence. We will have a good life if we make use of the benefits provided by our government. Beary community is one of the best with many talented people and intellectuals. Many people are very proud of our community. We must follow the holy Qur’an. We should work together to fight for our rights in a calm manner without any violence. We forget the fact that Allah tests  people with every step. The almighty tests us by blessing us with money, fame and happiness. Most of the rich people are living with the concept that money, power and reputation should only reside within themselves. As long as this thought remains, our community will never unite or be empowered.  Presently, Alhamdulillah, our community is improving in a rapid manner in every field. Even a farmer is trying to give his children a better life than him. I believe that there is a need of a centralised system in our community. – Thoughts expressed by Mr. M.B. Abdul Rahman.

Interests and association

Although the Beary community was rich in talent, they failed to get the acknowledgement and recognition they deserved. This led a group of Beary businessmen and entrepreneurs from Mangalore to start an association named Beary’s Welfare Association to improve the status and unite the people of the Beary community where the Ullala sector was under the leadership of Mr. M.B. Abdul Rahman. The effort by Beary’s Welfare Association resulted in the formation of Kendhra Beary Sahitya Parishath in the year 1997 which included included Beary intellectuals, writers, poets and artists, of which Mr. Abdul Rahman was elected President. Later, the Beary Sahitya Academy was established in the year 2005 which was recognised and approved by the Karnataka government. Mr. M.B. Abdul Rahman served as the first President of the Beary Sahitya Academy.
